| AMST200 Special Topics: The Manson Family and the 1960’s | J Melnick | Jan 7 - Jan 25 | W-1-041
Wheatley Bldg, 1st Floor, Room 041
| MTuWThF | 12:00 - 2:30pm | 3 | 1147 | $1020 | |
Description for AMST200: In this course students will be introduced to the history of the Manson Family — Charles Manson’s murderous cult that lived in and around Los Angeles in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The "family" came to public prominence in August of 1969 when members were accused of two sets of horrific murders. We will examine the history of the case itself (and the many later artistic representations of it) and also will explore the context surrounding it — the rise of the counterculture in California, the development of "hip" capitalism in and around the music business, and the changes in race and gender arrangements that so many observers thought the case embodied.
Prerequisite: ENGL 102.
